That's a really good question. Many would say "A European", but "An European" would be grammatically correct.

I know this is unusual as grammar rules would say to use an but since european makes a y- sound at the beginning, and y is a consonant, you would actually use 'a european'. This is probably very confusing but English is a very confusing language. I hope this helps

You would say A European because European has the starting sound of ya. The starting sound is more important for differentiating a and an.

It's a European. In the same way we say an hour despite the fact it starts with a consonant, we'd say a European.
