HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP: Bourne baseball continues hot playoff start with upset win (2024)

The Bourne baseball continues to prove why they are the reigning Division 5 state champs. After they snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 10-0 win over Gateway Regional in the preliminary round on Sunday, they followed that up with an upset 6-3 win over No. 10 Westport on Monday.

Luca Finton threw a no-hitter on Sunday, and continued with another strong game on the mound Monday with 112 pitches. He pitched a back-to-back complete game, struck out 15, allowed three runs, and scattered five hits. Ty Kelley led the Canalmen (5-17) at the plate with the two of the three hits, to go with three scored runs, one RBI, and one walk.

Baseball

Div. 5 Round of 32: No. 1 Georgetown 11, No. 32 Cape Tech 0: The Crusaders finished the season 13-9 after they fell to the top seed on the road. Matt Riker had the only hit for Cape Tech. The Crusaders defeated No. 33 Athol 4-3 in the preliminary round.

Boys Tennis

Div. 4 Round of 16: No. 2 Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion 4, No. 18 Nantucket 1: The Whalers (8-10) finished their season on the road in the Round of 16. They upset No. 15 Frontier Regional 5-0 in the Round of 32.

Div. 4 Round of 16: No. 4 Hamilton-Wenham 5, No. 13 Monomoy 0: The Sharks finished 13-7 on the season as they lost on the road in the Round of 16. They defeated No. Rockport 4-1 in the Round of 32.

Div. 3 Round of 16: No. 5 Martha's Vineyard 5, No. 21 Boston Latin Academy 0: The Vineyarders (14-4) are headed to the Round of 8 for the second straight season as they picked up their second playoff sweep win at home.

Div. 4 Round of 16: No. 9 Cohasset 5, No. 8 Sturgis West 0: The Navigators (10-2) lost their second match of the season. They defeated No. 25 Seekonk 4-1 in the Round of 32.

Boys Lacrosse

Div. 4 Round of 32: No. 3 Sandwich 17, No. 30 Lenox Memorial 3: The Blue Knights (16-3) started the postseason with a win on their home field. Cole Rodgers (four assists), Daniel Oman (three assists), and Avery Richardson (two assists) each scored three goals for Sandwich.

Jack Connolly (two assists) and Kurt Moniz each found the back of the net twice, Sullivan Gaffney, Harry Delman, Jack Hughes, and Thomas Sutton (first varsity) each chipped in one goal, and Dylan McCabe (10 ground balls) and Reece MacKinnon (13 face-off wins) also contributed. Shane Corcoran (six saves), Than Hunt (four saves), and Liam Hallet (two saves) each played well in goal, while Tate Baecker was solid on defense and in clearing.

Div. 4 Round of 32: No. 1 Nantucket 19, No. 32 Littleton 3: The top seeded Whalers (17-1) started their playoff run with a double digit home victory.

Div. 3 Round of 32: No. 3 Falmouth 22, No. 35 Lowell Catholic 2: The Clippers (16-4) made a statement in their playoff game of the season. They will host No. 14 Pembroke on Wednesday in the Round of 16.

Div. 4 Round of 32: No. 8 Manchester Essex 17, No. 25 Bourne 6: The Canalmen's (12-7) season came to an end in the first round of the postseason.

Div. 1 Round of 32: No. 9 Franklin 18, No. 24 Barnstable 7: The Red Hawks (4-15) ended their season in the first round of the postseason.

Girls Lacrosse

Div. 4 Round of 32: No. 2 Nantucket 16, No. 34 Hampshire Regional 0: The Whalers (21-0) continued their unbeaten season as they won their first playoff game at home with a shutout. Bailey Lower (four assists, eight draws) and Emerson Pekarcik (one assist) each scored five goals, while Cydney Mosscrop added two goals and three assists for Nantucket. Mayson Lower (two assists), Maddie Lombardi, and Claire Genthner each added one goal, Myah Johnson contributed two assists, and Claire Misurelli had three saves in goal.

Div. 3 Round of 32: No. 5 Foxborough 17, No. 28 Martha’s Vineyard 6: The Vineyarders (10-10) fell in their first road playoff game of the season. They defeated No. 37 Greater New Bedford 10-2 at home in the preliminary round.

Div. 3 Round of 32: No. 3 Hanover 17, No. 30 Upper Cape 3: The Rams (16-5) finished the season with a road playoff loss. Upper Cape defeated No. 35 Shawnsheen Valley Tech 14-9 in the preliminary round.
