Although rumors and beliefs about Black people selling their souls are as old as this nation, the parasocial relationships of social media have taken the music industry to the next level. Currently trending the algorithm are clips of Jaguar Wright alleging rumors against some of the industry’s most well-known entertainers, TikTokers debating if 4Batz is an “industry plant” and discourse about Tyla joining the Illuminati.

Black people, and inherently Black music, have been seen as demonic since we sat foot in America. From the outlawing of drums, horns, and instruments in plantations throughout the colonies and The Caribbean to the demonization of blues and jazz as the Devil’s Music, or the practice of human sacrifice to achieve success and fame in the music industry, no amount of Bobby Jones Gospel can undo this. This belief as of late, has been amplified by Black social media users and content creators online.

To be fair, we have always been a superstitious people and in so, regulated to one set of religious beliefs or monolithic spiritual culture. Although, the church has been an integral part of Black culture and is the birthplace of many genres of American music. African traditional religions, Diasporic traditional religions, and Hoodoo have formed Black music and culture in America. Blues is commonly referred to as the soundtrack of hoodoo. Yet, it was the passing of anti-jazz legislation that solidified the connection between Black music and Satanism.

“Jazz was originally the accompaniment of the voodoo dance, stimulating half-crazed barbarians to the vilest of deeds,” says Ann Shaw Faulkner, president of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, a powerful alliance of women’s social and reform groups that launches a crusade against jazz in 1921.

Read ‘The Intersectionality Of Black Music Artists & AI: Are They Apart Of The Conversation?’

In the decades that followed and the genres created in the aftermath of the war against Black music, Black entertainers were always wary about how they were perceived by the public. All it would take is one petition or angry mob to deter their career in music. When hip-hop entered the scene, it inherited every belief that preceded it. The devil could be found on the 1s and 2s, right behind the DJ, while being on stage with the MC.

From N.W.A. being sued by the FBI to 2 Live Crew fighting for their rights in front of The Supreme Court, the newest Black genre was under attack. Like jazz, hip-hop was seen as something obscene, immoral, and demonic. When horrorcore, a subgenre of hip-hop that drew inspiration from horror films, Satan, and Southern Gothic aesthetics, rose in popularity, the belief was reiterated and affirmed.

What is often misunderstood about horrorcore is the usage of concepts and themes from horror and Satanism as an allegory to explain Black life in America. This was not outright Satanic worship but cries and pleas for help under the weight of the social ills of America birthed from its original sin of slavery. However, like the Black musicians before them, their musical expression was denied the humanity to be seen, acknowledged, and understood. Yet, nothing would rock the country more than Beyoncé’s 2013 Super Bowl halftime show.

The monochromatic Black outfit, the flames on stage, the “Roc” sign, and the power going out after her performance proved that she was a part of the Illuminati. Alongside her husband Jay-Z, another rumored member of the Illuminati, the celebrity couple has been accused of selling their soul for years. When Beyoncé sampled The Clark Sisters for “Church Girl,” a standout track on Renaissance, Bishop Patrick L. Wooden Sr. of Upper Room Church of God in Christ described the song as “sacrilege,” followed by a secondary comment directed at the singer: “The only thing I can account for some of this stuff is somebody done sold their soul to the devil.”

Looking To See These Conversations Live? Grab your tickets to the 2024 Essence Festival Of Culture

His comment, which is not the first time a pastor or high ranking church official has accused Beyoncé of devil worship, is ironic, since Bishop Charles Harrison Mason, the founder of Church of God in Christ, worked with “roots”.

“When you look at healing traditions, one of the things that they talk about is the rootwork or the rootworker, the person who can work with the spirit of the root or the spirit of the leaf, so to speak,” says Yvonne Chireau, Author of “Black Magic: Religion and the African American Conjuring Tradition” and Professor of Religion at Swarthmore College and researches Africana religions and magic. “It’s not just healing of ordinary illnesses or afflictions. Healing also has to do with the healing of relationships. It’s a broader understanding of what healing and balance can mean. It’s not just physical, but it’s also spiritual.”

Although Bishop Mason claimed his roots were “wonders of God,” writes Chireau in “Black Magic,” rootwork, like Hoodoo, is an African American spiritual practice. If one does not elect to practice Christianity, that does not equate to worshiping the Devil. The question one should ask before engaging in conspiracy theories is why. To be completely honest, consumers are not entitled to know everything about celebrities’ lives.

Cambridge Dictionary defines parasocial as “involving or relating to a connection between a person and someone they do not know personally, for example, a famous person or a character in a book.” Bishop Patrick L. Wooden Sr. does not know Beyoncé. TikTokers do not know 4Batz. Unless you are Lee-ché Janecke or Thato Nzimande, you do not know Tyla. Also, when did African Americans start to internalize and believe conspiracy theories rooted in anti-Blackness? Is being Black not enough to be successful in the music industry?

Regardless of one’s spiritual belief or practice, or even the absence of one, the dissemination of anti-Blackness conspiracy theories and lies is inherently harmful to Black artists in the music industry, especially at a time when lyrics are being used in trials against rappers. It’s time to replace the Internet’s beliefs with your own.

With the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years, the music industry has been a focal point of the conversation, specifically for Black artists. Various music producers and artists have toyed with AI software to create new techniques within the music creation process. For some, AI seems to be breaking barriers that wouldn’t otherwise be broken or have the possibility of existing. For others, AI has yet to be fully integrated into their lives. Could this be a result of minorities not being supported through technological transitions?

Many have feared that the lack of diverse representation in tech spaces will negatively impact AI-generated music from artists of color. The popular trend of music artists having their voices used on songs by other artists or for newly created songs began to create a conversation surrounding the allowed usage for the likeness of singers and songwriters. The growing trend soon got industry insiders involved. Universal Music Group (UMG) decided to step in and advocate for said artists by filing a copyright infringement lawsuit in the Fall of 2023 on AI company Anthropic.

According to Reuters, the recording company accused the tech brand of wrongfully using song lyrics for over 500 songs to train a chatbot on their platform. As the case progresses, Anthropic has continued its stance that there were no misappropriations of said lyrics and that the utilization of the songs was merely harmless. “I personally haven’t had any use for AI when creating music,” says emerging West Coast rap artist and photographer Mekhi Stevenson (professionally known as M2), who expressed his curiosity about artificial intelligence in music.

Though he has yet to dive deeper into software like Magenta or Lalal.ai, which specialize in aiding with music curation, Stevenson feels that it has the potential to be useful in the future if utilized correctly. “I heard Ty Dolla $ign speaking on it before, and it opened my eyes when he brought up reference tracks,” he tells GU.

Read ‘How Will AI Affect Society?’

Reference tracks are another looming example of how AI can be seen as beneficial and detrimental to music artists of color. From one perspective, it helps to fast-track the process for musical vetting and identification of songs that fit one artist better than another. “A lot of artists make tracks to songs, whether it was for sale or not, in order for another artist to re-record it. He brought up the idea that if someone used his AI voice on the reference, it would save time as he wouldn’t even need to go and record it. In my eyes, as long as the person who will be touring it on stage can perform it up to par, then I see no wrong.”

Still, the opposing perspective can argue that this could open a larger window for the misuse and abuse of an artist’s voice by putting it at a producer’s or creator’s mercy. When diverse voices are not part of the curation of mainstream products, such as music, they can lack full quality and connectivity to represent diverse audiences. Historically, people of color have not been looped into technological advancements due to other races’ lack of concern to share or the previous history of not having been a heavier representation during the earlier developments of technology over time. This has resulted in what many balance as emotions of eagerness yet eeriness for what’s to come.

According to NBC Bay Area, Roy Clay Sr. is known as the “godfather of Silicon Valley” after he became the first African American to hold a prominent role in the industry and brought others along with him. Clay’s efforts alongside those preceding him, like Katherine Johnson, James Edwards West, and Granville Woods, helped pave the way for representation in African Americans’ knowledge and interest in STEM, which many still fight for today. An example is a 2022 report by the National Center for Women & Information Technology stating that only 6.3 percent of Black tech professionals make up the workforce.

The conversation of AI’s impact continues to circulate as software has begun depicting the work of Black music artists, cutting down on the creative process that derives from a person of color. YouTube and SoundCloud are prime examples of this, as they house numerous remixes, mashups, and renditions not cleared by the artists or their management. While fans may enjoy these releases, they can compromise the integrity of an artist’s truthful craft of singing or rapping something from their own experience rather than being generated by software.

Indie pop and R&B artist L!nwood (Linwood Smith) has experience using AI throughout his music career and sees the new tech advancement as something that will push the industry forward. “There are a lot of tools that have been extremely helpful when I create my music or write songs,” he says. “I think AI can make creating easier in different stages of the music process, although I still think it’s important to not rely too much on AI.” The Maryland native confirmed his usage of the platform LANDR, which advertises its mastering capabilities to help producers and artists fine-tune their recordings for clarity and conciseness.

“Decades ago, the only way to make music was in a true recording studio, and now anyone can make music from their bedroom. AI will make it easier for more good music to be made, and it will be silly to try to ignore it,” Smith says. “I just hope that AI doesn’t taint the artistry of creating music, and I hope that 100 percent AI music doesn’t become the norm.”

It’s easy for student changemakers to feel overwhelmed when leading campus activism and tackling change alone. A survey from 2023 found that 15 percent of Gen Z adults in the US participate in rallies or protests, compared to eight percent of Millennials and Gen Xers. Take Kessley Janvier, a student at Georgetown University, for example. She is an activist primarily engaged in reparations work as a member of Hoyas For Slavery Accountability (HASA). This student organization aims to support descendants of slaves by ensuring that Georgetown ful>McKinsey Health Institute, more than 50 percent of Gen Z expressed fear and anxiety about the future. Dr. Michelle Mitcham, an Associate Professor at Rutgers University and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida, shared insights with Girls United regarding the emerging trends in mental health observed within the em>Kaela Jackson is deeply committed to advocating for Juvenile Justice and education. While she acknowledges that solving the world’s problems is not solely her burden, she finds comfort in leaning on her family and friends during overwhelming moments.

“Activism often takes a toll mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, as one must fight for change in communities that directly affect them or that they’re deeply passionate about. When the weight becomes too heavy, I reflect on the progress society has made and cherish our victories, ” Jackson says. “I remind myself of the resilience of those who endured eras like slavery and segregation, expressing gratitude for their perseverance. Above all, I turn to my family, friends, and loved ones for comfort, reminding myself that I cannot single-handedly change the world.”

Both students acknowledge that activism can take a mental toll, but the work remains essential. Dr. Mitcham offered college students some tips on how to practice self-care while staying socially active.

Read ‘Riot Pens: Are HBCUs Putting Legacy Before Progress?’

SWOT Analysis

Dr. Mitcham advises students to establish a self-care plan and establish boundaries. In her interactions with patients, she has observed that self-care is often neglected amidst busy schedules. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries concerning activism and social media, cautioning against allowing activism to encroach upon family and spiritual time. She suggests creating a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) for personal self-care, employing the SCAMPER technique: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse.

Mindfulness Techniques

She suggests that students consider downloading apps such as the Calm app. Alternatively, she advises exploring YouTube for guided imagery sessions for those unable to afford subscription prices. This practice allows individuals to create a tranquil environment, close their eyes, and safeguard their personal space. She highlights that this practice aids in mitigating compassion fatigue, preventing total burnout.

Seek Professional Support

According to Dr. Mitcham, students should consider visiting college centers for support. If they don’t feel comfortable there, they can explore numerous apps offering access to professional therapists. Verifying the education and professional experience of the individuals providing assistance is crucial.

Understand The Importance Of Saying No

She recommends the importance of learning to say “no.” You’re not obligated to agree to everything; not everyone needs to be informed of your activities at all times. Prioritize your peace of mind! Remember, you only have one you. In her years of working with college activists, she has observed that neglecting self-care often leads to an increase in anxiety attacks. Some individuals who experience panic attacks may mistake them for heart attacks. Another common issue she encounters is situational depression, characterized by temporary feelings of sadness that can be overcome with time and support.

The summer is here, so it’s time for Gemini to do their thing. What zodiac sign says “it’s party time” more than a Gemini? Anyone with this air sign is known for being friends with every creature running down the pike.Geminis never met an animal they did not like. This air sign is known for being creative and possessing a natural ability to adapt to any environment.

The zodiac twins rule the Sun from May 21 through June 21. Some of our favorite outspoken entertainers are Ayra Starr, Normani, Tems, Zaya Wade, etc. These versatile and enthusiastic members of the zodiac are the ones that tend to be the indecisive talkative friend or the socialite ordering shots for the rest of the night. They can be impulsive or superficial depending on the event you invite them to, but know that you are bound to laugh if they are around.

Gemini is the third zodiac sign, and its house symbolizes the mind, communication, and social activity. Its natural ability to see various angles of life gives it its dual-natured persona. This mutable sign rules Mercury, the planet that represents dualism, convertibility, and curiosity. We know what you’re really here for, so grab your morning drink and see what June has in store for you this Gemini season.

The new home you have selected to build with your loved one should be on a solid foundation. Moving day has finally arrived.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Your mind is your biggest enemy, and you need to trust the process. Give yourself peace of mind and sing “Insane” by Summer Walker. Let go of the world’s unrealistic expectations.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Someone is feeling loved- cue “Best Friend” by 50 Cent. Some people realize that you are the best lover with a beauty that no one can match. Bump “Just Like Magic” by Ariana Grande because good karma is on you, and you finessed it with your love letters to heaven.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Has your hands been itching lately? Expect to spend big bucks on a few expenses that you have been holding out on. Time to clear up that credit debt and spend less time at Sephora.
