How many miles per gallon does the MX-30 R-EV get? ›

All MX-30 R-EVs come with a three-year/60,000 miles warranty, plus an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty specifically for the drive battery. Mazda did well as a brand in the 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, finishing in 13th place out of 32 car manufacturers – below Kia, but above Peugeot, Citroen and Volkswagen.

Mazda announced that it will stop selling the MX-30 electric SUV in the United States after the 2023 model year. The company says it is instead focusing in plug-in hybrids such as the new CX-90 and upcoming CX-70.

According to the technical sheets, the MX-30 R-EV could drive for 400 miles (643 km) before you need to stop and refuel or recharge. The rotary engine will kick in when the battery needs charging, even if you tell it to by selecting "Charge" mode.

The energy contained in 1 gallon of gas is equivalent to 33.7 kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity. So for example, if an electric vehicle can travel 100 miles on 33.7 kWh of electricity, it would be rated with an MPG equivalency of 100 MPGe.

The usable capacity is 30 kWh (estimate). A range of about 105 miles is achievable on a fully charged battery.

As it turns out, the MX-30 got a failing grade from consumers, and it's not getting a terribly flattering eulogy. Maybe Mazda's next EV will be better suited for our market; until Mazda figures that out, however, it'll focus on selling us larger PHEVs like the CX-90 and CX-70.

At least, not in the United States. In other parts of the world, bargain electric vehicles from China abound, but a 27.5% tariff has kept those cars out of the United States.

The Mazda MX-30 is front wheel drive and can accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 9.7 seconds. The top speed is 87 mph.
